Working Together

WORKING TOGETHER


We shape our self
to fit this world
and by the world
are shaped again.

The visible
and the invisible

working together
in common cause,
to produce
the miraculous.

I am thinking of the way
the intangible air
passed at speed
round a shaped wing

easily
holds our weight.

So may we, in this life
trust
to those elements
we have yet to see
or imagine,

Home Work

Dear Beloved,

I am asking you to join me and step out of our comfort zone
just a little bit today or tomorrow and see what happens.
I will almost guarantee that it will make your day very special
as well as someone else’s.

Some of you may be doing this already but I bet we could all
step it up just a bit perhaps and when we step out of our comfort
zone and do these exercises in LOVE, it just gets easier each
subsequent time.

Here is our “homework”, should we decide to accept it 😉

1) Offer a hug to someone that you come across in your day.
Not your regular “hug recipients”, but someone you know or
perhaps someone you don’t. Feel the love that gets exchanged
when we do that. How Cool is that ?

2) Offer up an “I LOVE YOU” or a “LOVE YOU” to someone that
does not normally receive one from you. Perhaps a friend or family
member that is deserving of this. It will have an amazing effect
on you BOTH !

It is interesting that it is so difficult for most of us to do these things.
I noticed this about myself when, in the past, I would write an email
to someone who I really care about and I found it difficult sometimes
to write “LOVE YOU” and especially to say “I LOVE YOU”. The ” I ”
really can be scarry, but how sad is that ? I also found that even though
it’s scarry to reach out to someone with outstretched arms to offer a hug,
they generally are as “touch deprived” as the rest of us are and they
accept it without question, (and they are often honored by your gesture).

So perhaps a few of us who read this, can teach another person how
to Love a little bit better and perhaps this is a way we can really brighten
up our small corner of the world.

Perhaps it is worth a try ?

Sabbaths 1999, VII

Again I resume the long
lesson: how small a thing
can be pleasing, how little
in this hard world it takes
to satisfy the mind
and bring it to its rest.
With the ongoing havoc
the woods this morning is
almost unnaturally still.
Through stalled air, unshadowed
light, a few leaves fall
of their own weight.
The sky
is gray.  It begins in mist
almost at the ground
and rises forever.  The trees
rise in silence almost
natural, but not quite,
almost eternal, but
not quite.
What more did I
think I wanted?  Here is
what has always been.
Here is what will always
be.  Even in me,
the Maker of all this
returns in rest, even
to the slightest of His works,
a yellow leaf slowly
falling, and is pleased.

A Dumb Experiment

Break open your personal self
to taste the story of the nutmeal soul.

These voices from that rattling
against the outer shell.

The nut and the oil inside
have voices that can only be heard
with another kind of listening

If it weren’t for the sweetness of the nut,
the inner talking, who would ever shake a walnut?

We listen to words
so we can silently
reach into the other.

Let the ear and mouth get quiet
so this taste can come to the lip.

Too long we have been saying poetry,
talking discourses, explaining the mystery out loud.

If I Only Knew…

If Tomorrow Never Comes

If I knew it would be the last time
That I’d see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.
If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more
If I knew it would be the last time
I’d hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.
If I knew it would be the last time,!
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say “I love you,”
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.
If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I’m sure you’ll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.
For surely there’s always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.
There will always be another day
to say “I love you,”
And certainly there’s another chance
to say our “Anything I can do?”
But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I’d like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.
Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.
So if you’re waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you’ll surely regret the day,
That you didn’t take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.
So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you’ll always hold them dear
Take time to say “I’m sorry,”
“Please forgive me,”  “Thank you,” or “It’s okay.”
And if tomorrow never comes,
you’ll have no regrets about today.

I know that I Love You.

I know it is true.

Not as the mind knows.
And so I don’t care why.

I can love what I love
just because I do.

After all,
who makes the rules?

There is no reason
and so there you have it Beloved.
We can cut through
it all
and love what we love
just because
we do.

Birds sing high in the trees
never in caves
or wherever they want
just because they want
to celebrate
that kind of freedom.

There is no trivia,
detail,
or rules,
that gives us this love.

It just comes.

We can feel it.
